Selected Portfolio Site

IslaTravelers.com

IslaTravelers was my first website. I started the site in August 2005 with a simple page consisting of a picture of a Mexican Caribbean sunset and a link to a very basic phpBB2 based message board. The intent was to have a way to publish stories that I had written about our visits to Isla Mujeres Mexico and to provide another discussion forum for some friends whom I had met in our travels or on internet message boards related to travel to that area.

The site, which remains one of my favorite hobbies, continues to evolve. I began a project at the first of the year to change the entire site in several stages. The first stage was to make re-write the part of the site outside the forum system to be valid XHTML 1.0 Strict and valid CSS 2.1. The next step was to migrate the forum system, including blogs, photo galleries, and event calendar to phpBB3.

This step, which I had been planning for over a year, meant that I had to create two new style templates for the board, and test and modify three major mods for phpBB3. I also had to develop on my own a newsfeed parser for the portal page, and several new functions so to aid users in navigating the new forum system.

Currently, I am in the process of performing another site re-organization. For personal reasons, I needed to terminate the message board, therefore I am editing those functions that tied into the forum system. I do want to continue to offer storm notices and weather information, and to accomplish this, I plan to integrate a Wordpress blog into the weather info section of the site.
